Judaism
(3 basic contemporary forms
with wide ranging views)

The God of the Old Testament; or for other branches, non-dogmatic and flexible.

Morally neutral or basically good, depending on the branch.

Essentially sinning in moral and social actions

Bettering society and.self. A right standing with God is already presumed.

Self reliance and human effort seen as fulfilling ritual, being obedient to the law of God, and maintaining Jewish identity

Afterlife with God. For most reformed Jews, no personal afterlife.

Hinduism

(Vedanta is most
popular form in the West)

Triad of gods: Brahman, Vishnu & Siva + millions of others. God is an impersonal oneness with no moral distinctions.

Our body, personality and world are essentially illusions. We're extended from the Being of God which is one.

We're ignorant of the fact that we're divine and have become subject to the law of karma and reincarnation.

Liberation from this ignorance, and from the cycle of reincarnation. See morality as unenlightened consciousness.

Self-reliance and human effort seen as the way of works, knowledge or devotion. Enlightenment by successive reincarnations.

Enlightenment

Merge into Oneness
Self disappears

Buddhism

Rejected Hinduism's many gods. God is an abstract void...no personal creator. Mayhayana see Buddha as a historical manifestation of god, the absolute void.

An impermanent collection of aggregates (like emotion, will, body, etc.). No individual self exists

We suffer because we desire. That causes us to continue in the illusion of the individual self and the cycle of death / rebirth

Cease all desire in order to realize non-existence of the self and find permanence,

Self reliance and human effort seen as following the Buddha's eight-fold path, rituals, realizing Buddha nature and gaining karmic merit

Enlightenment

Nirvana

Ego extinguished

Cycle of Reincarnation ends

Islam

One transcendent God of strict judgement. Not a Father who loves and seeks out prodigals/sinners,

Good by nature

Non-submission to Allah's will and rejecting right guidance

Repentance

Self reliance and Human effort seen as good deeds outweighing bad (2 angles record this), prayer, almsgiving, fasting and pilgrimage

Paradise is a place of pleasure where men marry as many as they choose.

Secularism/
Secular Humanism

Matter is all that has ever existed or will ever exist,

We consist only of
matter. We're the
highest point on the revolutionary scale

Depending on irrational religion instead of our minds to solve problems and bring peace and justice

Dump belief in supernatural and extend scientific method into all areas of life. Be compassionate.

Self reliance and human effort seen as reason and science making sense of all life and man as the measure of all things.

Peace on earth
At death, nothing!

New Age

An underlying life force or vital energy from which all reality emanates. A Universal Self.

Particularizations of the Universal Self...we're divine too!

Ignorance of our oneness with the Universal Self

Experience oneness with the One and the interconnectedness of all things,

Self reliance and human effort: yoga, meditation, channeling, past life regression, imaging, etc.

Now: Peace on earth Future: total merging with the universal Self.

Christianity

Personal, infinite, all-holy powerful, seeing and knowing. Just and merciful and incarnated in Jesus Christ, his son.

Mankind is great since made in God's image, But we are not part of God. He is transcendent and infinite,

All are in the same boat...sinners in the face of the all-holy God. The wages of our sin is death - physical, spiritual and eternal

Being restored to a personal relationship with God, forgiven of all our gins, and then living for Him according to biblical principles,

By God's grace, mercy and compassion through trusting not in our own
efforts, but in Jesus Who, on the cross, took on the
punishment we deserve

A life of abundant meaning and purpose now, and life with God in a restored universe for eternity.
